Giving and Kindness
I want to focus on GIVING here because KINDNESS is covered in Chapter 8. When you get there I hope you'll read it with the understanding that being loving and being kind are essentially the same.
What does it mean to be giving? What do we give that shows our love of others? Money? Empathy? Caring? Compassion? Listening? Service? All of these and more. Being giving means showing an unselfish concern for others, and acting on it. This often includes self-sacrifice. What do we give? We give ourselves to the betterment of others. We come to their aid, we teach them, we comfort them, we help them grow, we enhance their lives. The more we give to others, the more it comes back to us. We reap what we sow.
Think for a minute what the world would be like if everyone made their best effort at living each day with this type of love. Think for a minute what your individual world would be like if you made your best effort at living each day with this type of love. Does it seem impossible? To many it does, so they won't even try. But the truth is that there are literally millions of loving people throughout the world. Why don't we hear about them? Because the media prefers to publicize celebrities, criminals, perverts, the super wealthy, corrupt public officials, and cheaters. Loving people rarely make the news.
Yet these are the people who make the world a better place and make our lives better just from knowing them. They also teach us that when life is at its most painful, love is our only chance for genuine healing. As Lydia Maria Chid wrote, love "restores life."
