Positive Mind, Healthy Heart - Day 43 and Day 44

Day 43

Give yourself the cushion of time.  We are over-schedule.  We work too hard.  This is not good!  Feeling perpetually pushed for time often leads to chronic stress (or, more accurately, distress).  Stress can have a terrible impact on heart health.  In addition to driving people to skip exercise, eat too much fast food or smoke, it can also cause elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, blood clotting and arterial inflammation.  Help yourself cope by expecting the unexpected; build that cushion into your day.   Instead of cramming your schedule, fill it to 80%, leaving 20% for traffic jams, family illness and other surprises.  And if there are no surprises, you can reward yourself with some time off!

Day 44

A high school teacher stood in front of his class of 35 seniors.  Before passing out the final exam, he said, "I know that since most of you are off to college next fall, grades are very important.  Because I am confident that you know this material, I will give an automatic B to anyone who opts to skip the final exam."  A number of students sighed with relief, jumped up and left the room.  The teacher then handed out the exam to the students who remained.  It consisted of two sentences:  "Congratulations, you have just received an A in this class.  Keep believing in yourself."
(Author Unknown)

I read this story a few times before daring to ask myself what I would have done.  In my younger life, I may well have taken the easier road.  But now I strive for a greater reward.  Building a life based on healthy habits has been tough at times, but the reward has  been incalculable --better health, a longer life, watching my children grow.  No matter how hard and bumpy the road, I knew I could, and would, stay on it.  I believe in myself.  Try believing in yourself, too.
